Which parts of the forklift truck should be checked most often? Part III

Some time ago, I started this series of articles to present the parts that wear out the fastest and which are replaced most often. Go through the third and last part of this series to discover the parts you need to check regularly, but also the aspects to be careful about.

Hydraulic pumps

There are two different types of hydraulic pumps that can operate the hydraulic actuator of the forklift. One of them is axial, and the other is centrifugal. Before replacing the pump, make sure you know exactly which part is mounted on your forklift. Below, you will find a list of the main problems that may cause malfunctions in the forklift hydraulic pump.

  • Fluid leakage
  • Contamination of hydraulic fluid
  • Incorrect hydraulic fluid temperature
  • Extreme wear
  • And more

In the event that the hydraulic pump is difficult to operate, starts poorly or emits an abnormal noise, it is mandatory that the forklift is checked and the pump repaired or replaced.

Chain

The chain of the mast for the forklifts is very similar to the chain that a motorcycle has, the only differences being the length and the number of steps. Chains are generally very durable, but due to the fact that the forklift truck is used frequently, these chains will wear out quickly and even break. The moment when the chain of a forklift fails is quite dangerous, so it is best not to allow this to happen. Check the chain regularly and replace it when necessary.

Seat belts

Seat belts are extremely important because they prevent the operator from being thrown out of the forklift's cockpit if an unforeseen event occurs. In addition, as in the case of cars, all safety elements on board the forklift operate properly and in normal parameters only when the operator is wearing the seat belt. If the seat belt is loosened or looks like it is worn out, it means it's time to replace it with a new one.

Air filter

Forklift engines work just like those of cars. They need fuel and air to ignite the spark that will start the engine's combustion system. This is why an air filter is needed to prevent impurities of any kind from entering the combustion system of the forklift. If the air filter is damaged, it can cause additional damage to the engine and affect other important components of the forklift. Check it at least once every three months when you do the review.

We look forward to seeing you next week on Jungheinrich's blog to find out more useful information about forklifts.
